AI governance framework

  • Half day
  • For Boards
  • On site

A half-day session in which the board sets up how it oversees AI: who decides what between the board, its committees and management, what the board receives every quarter, and which evidence it should be able to table. You leave with a one-page governance framework and a quarterly report template.

Is this for you?

Who it is for

Supervisory and non-executive boards, or their audit or risk committee. The company secretary and the general counsel can join. It suits boards that receive AI updates in no consistent form, or cannot yet say who approves new AI systems.

Group size

3 to 12 participants: the board or committee.

Prior knowledge

None required. Helpful: AI risks & opportunities.

Core objectives

  1. 01Learn the building blocks of AI governance: a register of AI systems, risk classes, policies, an approval route, incident handling and audit trails
  2. 02Agree who decides what between the board, its committees and management
  3. 03Design what the board receives every quarter, including performance and risk indicators
  4. 04Know which documents the board should be able to table when asked
Why it matters

When something goes wrong with AI, the first questions are simple: who approved this system, who was informed, and where is the record?

Many boards find they cannot answer them.

How it works

BeforeYour governance documents and a talk with the chair
  1. 01 The building blocks of AI governance
  2. 02 Who decides what
  3. 03 The quarterly AI report
  4. 04 The evidence the board should hold

The session moves from the building blocks of AI governance, with ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework as reference points, to an exercise that allocates decisions, to the design of the quarterly report, and ends with the evidence the board should hold. Before the session, you share your governance documents, committee charters and current AI policies, and we speak with the chair or committee chair.

Deliverables

  • A one-page AI governance framework: the roles of board, committees and management
  • A quarterly oversight report template
  • A set of performance and risk indicators
  • A list of the documents the board should be able to table, with the gaps marked
