Board Strategy & Alignment
- 3 days
- For executive and supervisory boards together
- Your premises or Columbia Business School
A program in which the executive board and the supervisory or non-executive board build one AI strategy together. The executive board works out the strategy and its investment cases; the supervisory board sets how it will oversee them; in between, each tests the other's work. It ends in a joint session where the strategy is presented, challenged and adopted. At your premises, or as a private program at Columbia Business School in New York.
Is this for you?
Companies where both boards must stand behind one AI strategy: the management board or executive directors, and the supervisory board or non-executive directors. It suits two-tier and one-tier boards alike, for a single company or a group.
Both boards in full. Your CFO, CIO and HR director join selected sessions.
No technical background needed. The program is about decisions on strategy, money, roles and oversight.
Core objectives
- 01Build a shared view of what AI changes in your industry and your company
- 02Agree the risks and duties that apply, and the company's AI risk appetite
- 03Work out the strategy and investment cases, and the oversight, risk appetite and reporting that go with them
- 04Test each other's work before anything is decided
- 05Adopt the strategy together, with clear roles and the first funding decision prepared
An AI strategy that one board writes and the other only approves rarely survives its first hard decision.
When both boards build it together, the hard questions come up before the money is committed, and the roles for deciding, overseeing and reporting are agreed from the start.
How it works
- 01 Shared ground both boards on what AI changes, and the risks and duties that apply
- 02 Two tracks the executive board builds the strategy and investment cases; the supervisory board sets oversight, risk appetite and reporting
- 03 One decision the strategy presented, challenged and adopted, with roles and the first funding decision
The program runs in three parts. Shared ground: both boards together, on what AI changes and which risks and duties apply. Two tracks: each board does its own work, with moments to test the other's. One decision: a joint session in which the strategy is presented, challenged and adopted.
Deliverables
- A draft AI strategy both boards support
- An investment case for each initiative, with funding in stages
- A draft AI risk appetite
- Agreed roles: who decides, who oversees and what is reported, and how often
- A joint agenda for the next 12 months
- The first funding decision, prepared for the board
