Overseeing AI strategy

  • 1 day
  • For Boards
  • On site

A one-day program in which the board learns how a sound AI strategy is built, scored and funded, and then applies it to management's own plan. Directors leave with a review checklist, questions for each funding decision and a decision calendar for the coming 18 months.

Is this for you?

Who it is for

Supervisory and non-executive boards that will soon decide on an AI strategy or investment, or want to fund AI in stages with clear decision points. A board oversees the strategy rather than writing it; this program is built for that role. The CEO and CFO can join for the review part.

Group size

5 to 12 directors, plus the CEO and CFO if you wish.

Prior knowledge

None required. Helpful: AI risks & opportunities.

Core objectives

  1. 01Learn what a sound AI strategy contains, chapter by chapter
  2. 02Understand how initiatives are scored on value and feasibility, and how a value case is built
  3. 03Know how funding in stages works and which evidence to require at each decision point
  4. 04Practice reviewing a real plan, and set up how the board follows results
Why it matters

An AI strategy asks the board to commit money to initiatives with uncertain returns.

Without a clear way to judge the plan, boards either approve too easily or wait too long.

How it works

BeforeManagement's AI plan and a talk with the CEO
  1. 01 How a sound strategy is built, scored and funded
  2. 02 Review management's plan
  3. 03 Design how results are tracked

The program has two parts. The first is teaching: what a sound strategy contains, how initiatives are scored and value cases built, and how staged funding works. The second is practice: the board reviews management's current plan with a structured checklist, or an anonymized case if no plan exists yet, and designs how it will track results. Before the program, you share management's AI plan or strategy papers, and we speak with the CEO.

Deliverables

  • A review checklist for AI strategies, chapter by chapter
  • Questions for each funding decision
  • A decision calendar for the coming 18 months
  • A specification for the board's AI dashboard
  • Review notes on management's current plan, if there is one
